About this project

UN Women was supporting preparations of the sixty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66) with the priority theme of “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes”.

Under the overall substantive leadership and coordination of the Economic Empowerment Section and Disaster Risk Reduction team, UN Women sought an expert to support the development of thematic background papers to contribute to the deliberations of the Expert Group Meeting on the CSW66 priority theme.

This paper contributed to the priority theme report prepared by UN Women on behalf of the Secretary-General, which was discussed during the ministerial segment of CSW.

The report included three sections:

  1. Exploring gender-specific outcomes of climate change using an intersectional lens;

  2. Highlighting the institutional responses to climate change from a feminist perspective and their outcomes and promising practices: mitigations, adaptation and resilience building; and

  3. Showcasing climate and gender justice issues and initiatives to serve as good practices, lessons learned and recommendations for the way forward.
