About this project

The problem of gender inequality in development, including disaster risk reduction is a recognised challenge. Competing issues that exacerbate gender inequalities like climate change and disasters require gender-responsive management.

This report aims to begin a conversation about how the United Nations can make gender equality more than a written goal in global disaster frameworks such as the Sendai Framework, and actively include gender equality in disaster risk reduction.

The report asks what needs to change in the approach of the United Nations system as a whole, and for each individual entity, to make significant practical progress on this issue at the national and local level by 2030. It addresses the role of the United Nations in joining up the discourses on gender equality and disaster and climate resilience, in demonstrating an institutional commitment to gender equality, investment in expertise for gender analysis and practice of gender-responsiveness.
