Global literature review and baseline mapping on disability Inclusion in shelter and settlements programming
About this project
Millions of people lose their homes due to disasters and conflict every year. Affected individuals, households and communities face the challenge of rebuilding their lives in the same location or in new locations where they seek safety, security and opportunity. An estimated 15% of any population will have a disability, with potentially higher proportions among populations affected by crisis and conflict, due to new injuries and impairments. These individuals and their families face a range of barriers in accessing appropriate, safe and dignified shelter services and assistance in a humanitarian crisis. This reduces their access to opportunities and resources and adds to their vulnerability to protection concerns.
This project involved research for Global Literature Review and Baseline Mapping, including the barriers, challenges and opportunities to strengthen disability inclusion and mainstreaming in shelter and settlement programming. Recommendations are provided for future activities of the Working Group and wider Global Shelter Cluster along with key messages for shelter and settlement organisations, actors and donors. Complementary Case Studies were developed to provide practical examples of disability inclusion in a range of shelter and settlement programs for future sector learning.
